AP and Coaches choose USC No. 1

What's the thrashing of Virginia worth? It's worth enough first place votes to put USC atop both the new AP and coaches poll. The position will likely be held through next week, with the Trojans having a bye, and both Georgia and Ohio State still battling lightweights. But it sets up that September 13th meeting with the Buckeyes in Los Angeles, where the winner may solidify a No. 1 ranking and carry it a long way.

The Bruins were rewarded for their upset of Tennessee, appearing in the AP top 25 at No. 23. Tennessee dropped out of the top 25 in both the AP and coaches poll. Clemson, Michigan, and Virginia Tech were also dropped by the AP, with the coaches keeping only Clemson(22) of the bunch. Pittsburgh was also dropped by both polls, and South Carolina (24) and Utah (22,23) make their first appearance.
